Inspiration Flower Crowns

 I love how, like any other fashion, floral designs come and go and then come back again. My latest inspiration comes from beautiful crowns of flowers which until this year I very much associated with the 90's trend for flower girls (yes I was a flower girl in the 90's and I wore one!) before then it was the late 60's and 70's, I can just picture the long hair, floaty dresses, VW van and flower crowns. Fast forward 20 years and they are back and I love them! I can't wait to spread the flower crown love and create these beautiful designs!

I'm not really one for silk flowers however this subtle vintage hair crown is perfect if you don't want to make that bold statement and could be easily achieved with fresh flowers.

The Lonely Bouquet

I recently heard about a really amazing organisation called The Lonely Bouquet. The idea behind it is that you prepare a bouquet (and anyone can do this not just florists), tie a note to the bouquet which says "Adopt me please! I'm all alone and looking for a new home..Perhaps I could live with you or a loved one? Our flower friends would love to hear from me and find out where I ended up! Please let them know at...www.facebook.com/thelonelybouquet." Then you leave it somewhere public like a park or a street for someone to find and take home. I immediately loved this idea and wanted to make a bouquet to brighten someones day and to spread a little flower love!

So I had a bouquet and I was ready to spread some love, so I took a nice long walk to my local park, I figured there would be loads of people out walking their dogs at this time of night and I was right! So I left my bouquet on the path and watched from behind a tree (like a weirdo) and waited till someone picked it up!

After a few minutes I decided to not be so weird and head home and sit by my computer to wait for someone to post on facebook. It seemed like an age before anyone posted and in the meantime I spread the word across facebook and twitter that this Lonely Bouquet was looking for a new home. The response I got on Twitter was immense and I felt so excited to find out who had picked it up!

Finally my facebook bleeped and I received a notification telling me that a lovely lady had adopted my lonely bouquet! She sent me this picture of the bouquet in its new home.

It was such a lovely feeling knowing that I had done something to brighten someones day and it was pretty exciting too!

I heart Peonies!!

As this is a new blog and it is June, it is only right that I should blog about one of my all time favourite flowers...Peonies! They are everywhere at the minute but it almost seems like it's only a minute before their flowering season is over and they are gone again until next year. Which is why I feel I should show my appreciation for Peonies and write a blog post about them.

Here's a bit of trivia. The peony is named after Paeon, a student of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine and healing. Asclepius became jealous of his pupil; Zeus saved Paeon from the wrath of Asclepius by turning him into the peony flower.

Peonies are the traditional floral symbol of China and are known as the flower of riches and honor. With their lush, full rounded bloom, peonies embody romance and prosperity and are regarded as an omen of good fortune and a happy marriage which is perhaps why they are so often used in wedding flowers.

Inspiration Gyp

When I first became a florist, I absolutely hated Gypsophila (babies breath) I thought it looked cheap, old fashioned and it smelt really bad! At the time I was much more interested in super modern, chic designs like that of the Dutch Master Florists. However just 8 short years later rustic, vintage flowers are right on trend and gyp is everywhere!! And now I find myself suggesting it to brides as a low cost yet pretty and elegant alternative.

The Flower Shed

I'm Kirsty a freelance florist based in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. I began my career in 2006 and completed my NVQ Level 2 in 2008. The moment I walked into the shop on my very first day I knew that I was meant to be a florist and I absolutely love what I do!

Working from my Flower Shed I create beautiful bespoke designs for weddings, events and funerals. I offer a personal service, passion and a real love for flowers.
